Fall Prevention:

Currently falls are among the leading cause of death occurring in the elderly population. More than one third of adults have an unintentional fall once over the age of 65. Other injuries that occur from falls are bruises, fractures, dislocations, and brain injuries. Many elderly patients may not be aware of the risks that are involved in having a fall. The prevention of falls may be one of the most important things elderly adults and their families can do to ensure that their quality of life is maintained. There are many ways for the elderly and their families to prevent these falls from occurring. First, it is important to learn who is at risk for unintentional, debilitating, falls.
Who is at Risk?
People who are on certain medications that make them drowsy, dizzy, or agitated.
People who have a history of falls.
People who suffer from low blood pressure, heart disease, dementia, abnormal gait, weakness, poor balance, or Parkinson's disease.
Fall Prevention Tips:
- Make sure there is adequate lighting in all areas.
- Wear shoes that have a non-skid sole that can grip.
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages on your medications.
- When getting up from a lying position sit up slowly to
avoid getting dizzy.
- Be aware of possible side effects your medications may
have.
- Keep items within reach.
- Keep your home free of clutter.
- Use rails if available.
- Don't try to do too many activities at once.
- Know your physical limitations.
- Think about purchasing an emergency device that you
can carry with you at all times.
- Pick up your feet while walking, do not drag.
- Take your time when climbing stairs.
